4. The way to mithubeda -- the breaking of unity
We are told in the Mahāvagga ( D. ii. A -63) scripture and the Commentaries that after the most excellent Lord had announced the seven rules of aparihāniya in the Sārandada monastery, the Vajjī district of the Vesælī country advanced greatly as the result of following these rules.
ဤသုိ႔ ျမတ္စြာဘုရားသည္ သာရႏၵဒေက်ာင္း၌ လိစၧ၀ီမင္းသားတုိ႔အား အပရိဟာနိယတရား (၇) ပါးတုိ႔ကုိ ေဟာေတာ္မူၿပီး ေနာက္ ဤတရား(၇)ပါးအတုိင္း က်င့္၍ ၀ဇၨီတုိင္း ေ၀သာလီျပည္၌ အလြန္စည္ပင္တုိးပြါးေနသည္။
Years later, when King Ajātasattaru decided to bring war upon the Vajjī district, he sent his priest, Vassakāra Brahman, to address the most Excellent Lord.
The Lord’s younger brother, Ānanda, told him, “While the Lord was living the religious life in the Sārandada monastery, he announced the seven aparihāniya rules, and it is from following these rules as he announced them that the Vajjī district has become so rich.”
Vassākāra Brahman was told the further explanations that had been given along with the aparihāniya rules and he reported to King Ajātasattaru that if he wished to destroy the Vajjī district, there was no way of carrying this out except by breaking the common purpose of their assembly: he must cause a split by mithubeda,(An. III. A.-136) causing divisions in their companionship.
After this, Vassākāra Brahman went by himself to the Vajjī district and through the devices.
